Save the answer before you change the page

The original question and answer are worth keeping. They make the next comparison less dependent on memory.

Keep the context with the answer

If I want to check how a business appears in a search answer, I start with the exact question. I save the answer itself, including the source links, before deciding what to change on the website.

I keep the language, location settings, search engine or model, date and session conditions with that record. If a setting is unavailable, I mark it as unknown. I do not fill it in from an assumption.

Write down the change

“Improved the content” is too vague for a later review. I would record the paragraph, title, policy detail or internal link that changed, the date it went live and the question the edit was meant to help answer.

If the change corrects a business fact, correct that fact wherever it appears. If it is an experiment, keep the scope narrow enough to describe what you actually did. Save a copy of the previous page.

Repeat the check without overstating it

Use the same question and recorded conditions where possible. Keep repeated answers rather than choosing the most flattering screenshot. When a setting has changed, record the difference.

A different answer after an edit is an observation. It is not, by itself, proof that the edit caused the difference. Other pages, the search system, the session or the available sources may have changed too.

I also keep mentions, citations, website visits and enquiries as separate records. An answer can name a business without sending someone to its website.

Read the method before borrowing the result

The reading shelf pairs briefings about language, content rewrites and publisher referrals with their original papers. Before applying a recommendation, check what was tested, which system it used and which outcome it measured.

That is the purpose of the record: enough context to say what happened, enough restraint to say what remains unknown, and a next check someone else could repeat.

Open the observation sheet or download the Markdown record.
